I chanced upon Northwood Music when I was browsing for jazz
teachers online about a year ago. Ever since I joined Northwood
Music under the coaching of Eric Lee, I have become more versatile
in playing and critical in listening to the songs? rhythmic patterns,
chord progressions and more.It has definitely let me gain insights into improvisation and added
new flavors to my compositions.Jacqueline Liew
My daughter Batrisyia used to pursue classical piano but lost interest along the way as she was bored with playing the same old pieces. I thought to myself, what a waste! However, ever since she joined Northwood Music, her passion was revived and she made a turnaround and she is now very happy and willing to play on the piano
She finds it exciting to be able to play beyond what she sees in a traditional score and improvise a song and play the kind of music that she enjoys. Furthermore, I appreciate the fact that Northwood Music provides a constant platform for her to perform in public, thus boosting her self-confidence! To top it all, Batrisyia obtained a First Class Honours (97/100) in her recent ANZCA modern pianoforte examinations! She has indeed made a dramatic change in her pursuit of music!

When my daughter Alison told us she was interested in taking piano lessons, I was very skeptical as kids tend to have many interests and as time passes, their interests fade. I know of a friend whose son has been taking classical piano lessons for quite awhile, but he just would not play in front of anyone unless it?s for lessons or practice time.
So, afraid that she would be in the same fate, I decided that lessons got to be fun as well as to build confidence. After much checking and searching, I came across Northwood Music. The first time I met Eric, the Principal Coach, I was pleasantly surprised to hear of their teaching method. I thought there would be a lot of theory work, but he explained that students at Northwood would be taught not just how to read traditional notation, but will learn how to improvise and be creative as well.
To my pleasant surprise, within 3 months of learning, Alison started writing her own original songs! Amazing!
I believe she was allowed the creative freedom to explore and not to be afraid to venture and play with feeling and passion. Building confidence was another area that Northwood Music made the difference. I mean why learn to play if you’re not going to play in front of a live audience. They prepared the students for quarterly recitals, not in front of parents, but at live venues such as Music Dreamers Café, Library@Esplanade, Love The World Soul Rock Bistro & Bar, and many other locations. This confidence does not only show up during piano recitals, but also in other areas for Alison, such as swimming competition and her enthusiasm in school.
Alison is enjoying herself so much that she looks forward to every lesson and recital. She practices everyday and loves to improvise beyond the score! It really works and I can see she has been putting it to great use, trying to play songs that she has heard from the internet and radio. With Northwood’s guidance, she has now completed her Grade 1 ANZCA exam with Honours, and now planning to sit for her Grade 1 ABRSM theory exam. She is definitely enjoying herself and credit must go to Northwood Music for nurturing her talent and bringing out the joy in playing.
Thanks Northwood Music, for bringing out a true passion for music for my child!

“Despite having studied music since I was five years old, Eric has found novel and innovative approaches for my study in jazz piano. The lessons were tailored to my level and personal objectives. They have provided a framework which I will incorporate in my pratice routine for years to come. Even more importantly, Eric is a great pianist and his passion for jazz and the piano has given me renewed motivation to study and improve!”
