You will hear two piano samples of probably, the most popular, simple song in the world, ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’. At the top is the traditional, ‘normal’ way of playing the song. At the bottom is a reharmonised, contemporary (with a touch of jazz) version of the same song.

Twinkle Reharmonised

This is an excerpt from ‘Rainbow Connection’, done in a flowing, ballad style, some chords have been reharmonised with a touch of jazz.

Rainbow Connection

This is a classic jazz ‘swing’ standard made popular by Duke Ellington. In this excerpt, note how the left hand voicings make use of the 7ths and 9ths to full effect, including altered voicings in many cases. A smattering of altered voices are also deliberately used in the right hand melodic lines, including the use of bop and modal elements.

Satin Doll

A Sinatra classic. Notice how it is sung deliberately behind the beat in some measures and in other parts, how various timbres are employed to bring out the flavour of the song.
