- Tell me more about Northwood Music?
We champion the art and science of Modern Piano to students of all ages. We believe in combining the best in traditional, classical approaches with modern harmonic and rhythmic elements to create the well-rounded musician. We don’t believe in merely developing students who ‘take the grades’ but can only play examination pieces. Every student of us must be able to improvise, create, compose, read notes and most of all, develop a lifelong passion in music.
- Can I come for a free assessment?
Yes. You can contact us for a free assessment to determine your current playing level (if
any) and to better understand how we approach piano mastery through our unique
methodologies.
- I have some piano background. Where do I go from here?
Have you ever learnt piano in the past but can only play in a simple manner? Or you
marvel at some pianists playing so beautifully and expressively and wish you could do
just that? Or maybe you just want to pick up the piano all over again? You can come for
a free assessment to help determine where you are at and we will help you tailor a
suitable programme to meet your needs.
- I have no music background. Help.
Enrolling in the Beginner’s module will enable you to quickly learn the instrument by
giving you the absolute ‘crucials’ and essentials, even if you have no music
background.
- What should I look out for in my search for a good music instruction?
There are many good music schools and just as many good private music teachers. Either way is fine, as long as you do your research. Our advice is that it should go beyond ‘famous’ music syllabus or ‘brand names’. In any form of education, the coach is always the key. Our best moments of learning often coincided with an inspiring and well-informed coach. The coach is the one who brings to life all that is on paper. Ask any learner anywhere – he or she will tell you the same – it always boils down to the coach. Beyond all else, it is the coach’s passion and ability that makes the key difference in the learner’s willingness and ability to learn.
At Northwood, we believe totally in that. Quality of the teachers come first. Everything else is secondary. All of our coaches are stringently selected based on two important criteria: content mastery and the ability to teach and inspire a passion for music in others.
- My child has shown interest in music but I am not sure whether this will be sustained. What should I do?
Come for a free assessment with us. Our Principal Coach will personally make an assessment and recommend a solution from there. The last thing we want to do is to force our children to learn something that they don’t really like. On the other hand, it will be a waste of talent should we deny our children the opportunity to fully develop themselves should they have the interest in music. By coming for a free assessment with us, you can help foster your child’s artistic and intellectual talent from a very young age. Countless studies all around the world have shown that sustained music education is very beneficial to raising the social, emotional and intellectual quotient of any learner.
- Can you tell me more about learning the piano?
Many parents send their children for classical piano exams. Studies have shown that only about 20-30% make it to grade 8. Most give up halfway. This is natural. It takes a lot of passion, love and discipline to spend many years completing the entire ‘course’. Many parents tell us it’s a waste for their children to stop halfway but their children simply refuse to continue with the classical route because it’s boring and tedious. Why is this so?
In traditional, conventional piano learning, the typical child spends one year learning three songs in preparation for the exams. If you think about it, to learn three songs in one entire year is monotonous and dreary for many children-this is especially so when everything must be followed exactly as it is written. Surely, there’s more to music learning than mere memorisation and rote-learning.
What if there was a different method of learning that would excite your child or even yourself? What if there was a best of both worlds where you can truly enjoy the piano, play with or without scores, be inspired to learn and be certified in the process? Music in itself is a creative endeavour. Therefore the learning of music should also be creative and not just ‘rote’ based. At Northwood, we have discovered the way to do so and we would like to share this with you or your child.
At the end of the day, the most important question to ask yourself is, ‘What truly excites you that makes you want to sit at the piano and play for hours?’ Hopefully, it’s not because of an impending exam.
